Soy Candle Making Instructions
Supplies:
- Double boiler for the stove-top (a large sauce pan with an aluminum pitcher as your melting pot works great)
- Candy thermometer
- Heat resistant jars
- Stirring spoon
- Pot holder
- Soy wax
- Fragrance oil
- Wicks
- Wick stickers
- Caution labels
- Dye Chip
- Wick centering tool
Instructions:
- Begin by wicking your heat resistant container. Place a wick sticker on the bottom of the metal base of the wick and center it in the container. Non-circular or large containers may need to have multiple wicks to obtain a full burn pool.
- Place the melting pitcher with your wax in it into a larger pot with water; this will be your double boiler. After placing the melting pot containing wax into the larger pan, turn on the burner to simmer the water. Stir frequently.
- When the wax begins to melt, place a candy thermometer into the melting pot. If necessary, add water to the larger pan to maintain an adequate volume of water while heating the wax.
- When the wax is melted at about 120°F to 135°F, add the color chip a little bit at a time until the desired color is reached. Be sure all pieces are completely dissolved – smaller pieces will dissolve more quickly. Tip: drop a speckle of colored wax onto a piece of wax paper to test the color when cooled. You may place it in the freezer to quicken the process.
- The final thing to add is the scent. We suggest you add ½ oz. to 1 oz., by weight, of scent per pound of wax. Stir well and turn off and remove from the heat. Let cool slightly.
- Pour melted wax from the melting pot into your containers once the wax is cooled to about 90°F-105°F or just before it becomes completely cloudy. Tip: the proper pouring temperature helps prevent “frosting” and may vary slightly with different fragrances and colors.
- You may need to stabilize the wick by placing 1 to 2 sticks on either side of the wick, lying across the top of the container.
- Allow candles to dry completely before burning and placing your caution sticker. Enjoy!
